Paris Saint-Germain Overcomes Marseille in a Shootout to Lift Trophee des Champions Season-Opening Trophy in the Middle East.
The Parisian club has now won the prestigious trophy on 14 different occasions.
Paris Saint-Germain required a dramatic equaliser followed by a perfect spot-kick decider to get past their arch-rivals in Kuwait and capture a fourth straight French Super Cup title.
The European champions appeared to be sailing towards a comfortable win in the showdown between the French league champions and the Coupe de France holders after Ousmane Dembele opened the net early on.
Yet, the southern French side struck two times late to take a shock advantage. Initially, the English forward converted from the penalty spot, before Willian Pacho inadvertently directed the ball into his own net for an own goal.
In a breathtaking twist of fortune, Goncalo Ramos snatched a vital equaliser in the dying moments to force the match into a deciding shootout. PSG goalkeeper Chevalier then stood as the key figure, saving decisive attempts from O'Riley and Hamed Traore.
In the shootout, Ramos, the midfielder, Nuno Mendes, and Desire Doue all converted successfully for Paris Saint-Germain to complete a 4-1 penalty win.
Now 14-time winners Paris Saint-Germain, who faced last season's Ligue 1 runners-up Marseille after completing a league and cup double, have now lifted this competition for the twelfth time in the past 13 years.
