Pat Cummins Expected to Feature a Significant Contribution in the Ashes

Test match action

The pace bowler has claimed over 300 dismissals in 71 Test matches with an average of 22.10.

Australia's selection chief George Bailey has declared that captain Pat Cummins will have a crucial role in the upcoming England-Australia contest.

Rumors had circulated that the veteran bowler might sit out due to a persistent back stress problem that had not yet healed.

Previous updates from the Australian camp suggested no definitive call had been made regarding Cummins' participation, with the extended contest set to start on the 21st of November in the WACA.

Bailey expressed that Cummins is "building up" and remained hopeful about his chances of participating.

"It's clear that time is getting short and multiple considerations at play, not only his injury, but additional elements," Bailey remarked.

"The outlook is good. There's strong faith that he's going to play a major part. Ideally starting in Perth. If not, then we'll pick it up."

Injury History

Cummins was ruled out the white-ball matches against both Asian and Trans-Tasman rivals in the previous weeks after examinations confirmed a lower back issue.

There is a track record of spinal problems, with recurrences in several earlier campaigns forcing him out of multiple domestic campaigns in a short span.

He emphasized he would be bold in recovery efforts in his rehabilitation process to ensure his availability for the series.

He mentioned that there was no confirmation if he had started his bowling workouts as part of his recovery but conceded it was "becoming urgent" for him to recover fully for the opener.

Contingency Plans

If he's unavailable, veteran batsman Smith will take over the captaincy.

All-rounder Cameron Green was withdrawn recently from the national team for their one-day international series against India as a precautionary measure because of an abdominal issue.

The selector characterized it as a "small issue and mentioned that Green will play in the state-level matches, so will be "ideally positioned to deliver overs."

"We put so much time has gone into developing the strategy for him to participate for the first Test as an dual-role player," Bailey explained.

"Originally, he'd only feature in the starting games anyway. How he handles the willow in shorter formats, even if it just sets him back for 24 more hours, the choice was made to approach this more conservatively."
