Shifting from Acclaim to Rage: Conservative Reaction to Jeffrey Epstein File Release is Divided.
Right-leaning reactions to the limited disclosure of files involving the Jeffrey Epstein case have been sharply divided, with certain supporters of the previous administration highlighting the prominent presence of former President Clinton and other Democratic figures in photographs, while others expressed frustration over how extensive censorship cast former President Trump and GOP members in a negative manner.
Justice Department Justifies Censorship with Strong Hyperbole
Justice Department officials justified the heavily censored sections with fervent exaggerated language. “At no point in U.S. the nation's history has a President or the Department of Justice been this open with the public about such a delicate legal issue,” declared a senior Justice official Todd Blanche, who released a six-page letter outlining the censorship process.
Concerns Raised by Redactions
While Trump's name and image appear in portions of the documents, the widespread redactions raise significant concerns about what may be hidden beneath them. A number of conservative lawmakers swiftly called for greater openness.
“People are furious and walking away,” posted Republican Representative Marjorie Taylor Greene.
In a social media post, GOP Kentucky Thomas Massie said the censorship violate the law, and suggested that a future legislature may move to remove the top law enforcement official, Pam Bondi, for that violation. “Regrettably, this file dump egregiously fails to comply with both the spirit and the wording of the law,” he continued.
A Faction of Conservative Commentators Rally Behind the Release
But, some conservative pundits and Trump allies swung firmly behind the Justice Department's actions.
The release—from a DOJ run by key Trump associate Pam Bondi—contains scores of documents that are completely censored, and many of the individuals depicted in pictures have their faces obscured.
But a few do not, featuring prominent individuals like Bill Clinton, entertainer Michael Jackson, and scholar Noam Chomsky. The inclusion of Clinton, especially, allowed some conservative figures to launch the attack.
“This is quite rich how the political left falsely claimed President Trump of associating with a pedophile, only for the Trump DOJ to unveil documents that depict Bill Clinton swimming nude with a convicted sex offender,” stated conservative activist Laura Loomer.
“New documents show Bill Clinton shirtless in a hot tub with a woman that is not his spouse Hillary Clinton,” posted lawyer Rogan O’Handley. “There’s only one reason Epstein would take pictures of a US President with a young woman in a hot tub: Leverage.”
Former President Spokesperson Releases Response
Bill Clinton has repeatedly stated he was aware of no illegal activity by Epstein and has never been accused to have engaged in any misconduct. “The White House hasn’t been hiding these files for an extended period only to release them at the last minute on a weekend to protect Bill Clinton,” Clinton’s representative Angel Ureña stated in a statement.
“This is about protecting themselves from what comes next, or from what they will try and hide permanently. So they can release as many grainy 20-plus-year-old photos as they desire, but it is not about Bill Clinton. Never has, not ever be,” the statement added.
Overall Conservative Comment Seems Muted
Nonetheless, broader comment on the political right was relatively subdued following the disclosure, particularly when compared with the loud demands for action that preceded the congressional approval to pass a law requiring the documents' publication.
Loomer, who recently secured press credentials at the Pentagon, had been among the loudest proponents for a complete release. Earlier this year, she criticized the administration generally and Bondi in particular after a group of conservative influencers were given physical binders of materials that contained little previously unseen information.
