The UK and US have forged a important bilateral deal that will guarantee no import taxes on British pharmaceutical products entering the American market.

Agreement Details of the Deal

Under the terms of the agreement, the UK has agreed to boost expenditure on pharmaceuticals through the public health system. This commitment secures that duties on these vital goods will be held at nothing for a timeframe of 36 months.

This deal is in response to previous threats to hike tariffs on patented drug products, with figures floated as high as 100%.

"This agreement between the UK reinforces the worldwide climate for innovative medicines and introduces much-needed equity to U.S.–U.K. drug exports," a statement noted.

Commercial Significance

Medicines are one of the UK's biggest exports to the US, which is easily the largest buyer for major companies like GSK and AstraZeneca.

Export figures indicate that in the 12 months leading up to the third quarter, the UK sold pharmaceutical products valued at billions to the US. This amount represented nearly one-fifth of all goods exports in that timeframe.

"This agreement secures employment, stimulates funding and facilitates the UK to establish itself as a international leader for life sciences," a government official stated.

Key British Pledges

The pact entails several specific commitments from the United Kingdom:

  • Price Threshold Increase: The UK will lift the price threshold at which it judges new therapies to be prohibitively costly by a quarter.
  • Boosted Medicine Funding: There is a target to increase overall health service expenditure on medicines from 0.3% of Gross Domestic Product to 0.6 percent over the next decade.
  • Payback Limit: The percentage manufacturers must return to the NHS to prevent overspending will be limited at fifteen percent. Previously, rebates topped twenty percent.

Broader Context

The deal follows a ongoing row between the sector and the British authorities over spending levels and regulatory access.

The disagreement were exacerbated by claims that American patients were charged significantly more for the identical medicines than consumers in the UK and Europe.

Recently, several major pharmaceutical investments in the UK have been halted or cancelled, while major expansions have been directed toward projects in the United States.

The Science Minister acknowledged that the NHS had to increase expenditure on treatments, noting that its budget allocation on drugs had declined as a percentage of its overall budget over the last ten years.
